Google Introduces Video Chat

Posted by Shashank Krishna Friday, November 14, 2008

G

oogle’s making progress towards taking over the world. In a big day of new offerings, the Internet God announced yesterday the ability for users to video chat and check on the status of the flu outbreak. Odd combination, but useful nevertheless.

As such, Skype and iChat should probably start getting nervous. With Google video chat, they may just become obsolete. It’s nothing against their services, but Google is not a force to be reckoned with. The new video chat feature allows anyone with a web cam to talk for free simply by selecting “start video chat” while in a Gmail chat window.

On a strange, but somehow related note, Google also launched Google Flu Trends yesterday with the help of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The idea developed after Google discovered that there is a relationship between the frequency of search queries about the flu and the number of people who have flu-like symptoms in a specific area. The high tech flu tracking system can be automatically updated and thus provide earlier warnings of an influenza outbreak.

Face-to-face chats Is there anything Google can’t do?

Increase the Browsing and Downloading speed in Windows Vista

Posted by Shashank Krishna Monday, August 4, 2008

With windows Vista you have noticed the slow internet speed. The web browsing and downloading speed is very slow as compare to previous versions of windows. You can open the same sites in windows XP and server 2003 with the normal speed.

Follow the given steps to increase the Vista browsing speed:

First go to Advance tab in Internet Explorer properties and turn off the TLS (Transport Layer Security) encryption option.

Here to fix problem with some secure pages turn on the SSL 2.0 (Secure Sockets Layer) feature and click Ok button to close it.

In windows Vista, the TCP autotuning feature is enabled by default. Some web servers do not respond properly to this feature, so it appears that some sites open with very slow speed.

To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

First click on Start button and type CMD in Run option then press Enter.

At Command Prompt, type the following command and press enter.netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel= disabled

This command will disable the TCP autotuning feature. Now close the command Prompt and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

You can easily restore these setting by typing the following command at Command Prompt.netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel= normal

Now close the command Prompt and again restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

Adobe Flex...the ultimate web-application tool

Posted by Shashank Krishna Thursday, July 31, 2008

Adobe Flex
is a collection of technologies released by Adobe Systems for the development and deployment of cross platform rich Internet applications based on the proprietary Adobe Flash platform. The initial release in March 2004 by Macromedia included a software development kit, an IDE, and a J2EE integration application known as Flex Data Services. Since Adobe acquired Macromedia in 2005, subsequent releases of Flex no longer require a license for Flex Data Services, which has become a separate product rebranded as LiveCycle Data Services.

In February 2008, Adobe released the Flex 3 SDK under the open source Mozilla Public License. Adobe Flash Player, the runtime on which Flex applications are viewed, and Adobe Flex Builder, the IDE built on the open source Eclipse platform and used to build Flex applications, remain proprietary.

China becomes biggest net nation

Posted by Shashank Krishna Tuesday, July 29, 2008

China now has the world's largest net-using population, say official figures.

More than 253 million people in the country are now online, according to statistics from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The figure is higher than the 223 million that the US mustered in June, according to Nielsen Online.

Net penetration in the US stands at 71% compared to 19% in China suggesting it will eventually vastly outstrip the US.

The development is significant because the US has had the largest net-using population since records of how many people were online started to be kept.

"This is the first time the number has drastically surpassed the United States, becoming the world's number one," said a statement from the CNNIC, the nation's official net monitoring body.

The 2008 figure is up 56% in a year, said CNNIC. Analysts expect the total to grow by about 18% per annum and hit 490 million by 2012.

About 95% of those going online connect via high-speed links. Take up of broadband has been boosted by deals offered by China's fixed line phone firms as they fight to win customers away from mobile operators.

China's mobile phone-using population stands at about 500 million people.

Despite having a greater number of people online, China's net economy still has a long way to go to match or exceed that of the US or even that of South Korea.

Figures from Analysys International said China's net firms reported total revenues of $5.9bn (£2.96bn) in 2007. By contrast net advertising revenue alone for US firms in 2007 stood at $21.2bn (£10.6bn).

Search engine optimisation folks always talk about how important hosting location is. Or at least what country it is. Most of the tools that I use to look at a website location are very good at telling me what country they are in, but rarely much more than that. Here is some examples of how some sites show the location of your server:

However, Vertical Leap have a fun tool that can actually find for you the location of the server where your site is located and show you on a map! Here is where the Vertical Leap website lives:

Why not look where your website lives using the Vertical Leap Geolocation Tool!

Google - UK Superbrand 2008

Posted by Shashank Krishna

Google was yesterday named as the UK's top consumer brand for the first time in a study by Superbrands.

Google has this year beaten Microsoft who have held the title for the previous 2 years and moved up 2 places from 3rd.

The biggest worldwide search engine has beaten some old and established prominent brands and now leads the way as the UK's Superbrand. The list in general illustrates the importance of the technology and media sector to the UK market - as along with Google and Microsoft, the BBC, Sony and Apple rate highly.

Other strong performers here are the some members of the automotive world, the drinks giant Coca-Cola, the sports behemoth Nike and an assortment of household goods suppliers.

Being the most popular brand in the UK just illustrates how important searching on the internet has become as this is now a mainstream media distribution channel that is only going to grow further.

Microsoft Officially Ceases Windows XP Sales

Posted by Shashank Krishna Monday, July 28, 2008

On June 30 2008, Microsoft officially ceased sales of Windows XP to all major retailers and PC manufactures like Dell, HP, Lenovo etc.
Sadly even the great Save XP movement couldn’t bring about any change in Microsoft’s decision to prolong Windows XP lifetime so the question now is whether if Windows XP is really going [...]

Enhance Gmail Security By Forcing Secure Connection

Posted by Shashank Krishna Sunday, July 27, 2008

Gmail has a security feature which most free online email services still lack. It is the ability to use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) or more simply a Secure Connection.

Secure connection makes sure that the data and information shared between Google servers and your web browser remains encrypted. It proves to be beneficial when using Gmail in public sector area e.g. public WiFi hotspots or college/university labs.

Previously the only way to initiate a Secure connection between Gmail and your web browser was to manually type the (https://) protocol instead of (http://) to access Gmail but as it is not feasible for the unaware masses, Gmail has now introduced a new setting called Browser Connection.

Browser Connection lets users choose whether or not to force a secure connection. This way they won’t have to type in the (https://) protocol again and again while accessing Gmail.

One point to note is that though forcing a secure connection makes your data safe, but it slows down the speed and latency of your connection as it has to always encrpt/decrypt data at both ends while transfering. This feature is mostly recommended for users accessing Internet through a public WiFi.

Now with all those security features in hand, who thinks Gmail is the most safe and secure email service on Internet?

Increase the Number of Simultaneous Downloads in Firefox

Posted by Shashank Krishna Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Firefox by default allows only two downloads at the same time from a server. If you got to download more than to files from the same server in firefox. Here is a quick fix to this.

1. Open Firefox
2. Type about:config in the address bar.
3. Search for network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server by entering this in the filter field.
4. By default the value of this field would be set to 2, double click and set this digit to a number of your choice and less than 10 to increase the number of simultaneous download in firefox.

We’ve previously taken a look at how to Read Wikipedia on your iPod, but what if you wanted to listen to specific articles from Wikipedia rather than read them?

Pediaphon is a free service which translates Wikipedia articles into synthesized computer speech in the form of MP3 files. This makes it easy for you to grab any article you want to delve into, and listen to it on any music player, mobile phone or directly from your PC.

How did I like it? Well for short articles, I found it reasonably useful. For longer articles…. well, maybe it’s just me - but Pediaphon’s synthesized voice isn’t exactly the most pleasant sounding voice to listen to! Nevertheless, if you feel like some quick e-learning on the way to work, give it a shot.

How to REALLY Hide Folders

Posted by Shashank Krishna

Hidden files are good for organizing files, and helping to ensure critical files don’t get accidentally deleted.

Hiding them as a security measure however, is pretty much useless. A few simple clicks in Windows is all one needs to view everything which you’ve hidden on your system.

Free Hide Folder is a free tool which helps you REALLY hide everything, make it invisible, and secure it. You’ll even need to run the program and enter a password before you’re be able to even view those files.

What I also liked about it was that you could back up the hidden key (Not the data just the key) so you can restore the data easily if something happens with your system.

I wish you could drag and drop files into the program though rather than having to browse from the program itself, but aside from that it’s a beautiful piece of freeware.

Speed Up Browsing

When you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that TCP/IP really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although Windows XP and Windows XP have a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size.

You can do this with the registry entries below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]
"CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001
"CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180
"MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00
"MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d

Make a new text file and rename it to dnscache.reg. Then copy and paste the above into it and save it. Merge it into the registry.

7 Reasons not to Use IE

Posted by Shashank Krishna

I am a big fan of Windows. I almost like all the microsoft products. Except one, the browser, the browser that is a common name in most households . Its the one that most geeks hate, hate with all their coding power, Internet Explorer. There are tons of websites that have the hate IE campaign and have Bill Gates morphed with horns that make him look like a demon.

I want to give atleast 7 basic reasons to convince people why they would need to move away from IE.

1. Security
We have tons of viruses on the internet waiting to take over your computer and millions of malwares that want to suck information from your computer. We make sure that we have the latest and best anti-virus which could protect our computer from any virus and this anti-virus usually comes with a built in firewall which is like the Great Wall of China, nothing can come through it. But we have internet explorer which acts like a gateway to all the spywares and malwares and hence nullifying the reasoning behind having the best anti-virus.

The other browsers in the market don’t allow spywares to install through them easily without knowing it. IE makes it relatively trivial through two features called ActiveX and Active Scripting. These technologies were designed specifically for the purpose of giving websites more control over a users computer. Unfortunately, as we have seen with exploit after exploit - thats not always a good thing.

As some of the Microsoft knowledge base articles suggest, there are so many new ways to take control of one’s computer through internet explorer. This is a serious security threat.

2. Standards
All the web designers have to maintain a standard in order that their web pages/applications to be useful on all platforms and on all browsers. Infact, the browser concept came from having a standard that would not require a specific platform or an application. There is a set agreed upon standards which everyone around the world follow to make internet more user friendly and efficient. But internet explorer is set to change the world for the bad. Microsoft, for some odd reason, seems bent on breaking stride with these agreed-upon standards.

I am a web designer and I know that in CSS, there are so many features that would not work on IE but works on all other browsers. This restricts me from being creative and efficient. Many times, I am forced to change my design to suit IE and I sure am cursing IE all the way.

Microsoft wants to propose their own standards which is suitable for them, because they can. Its a multi-billion dollar company which has its effect on most computers throughout the world and they know that they can call the shots and they are being adamant by not going with the wave.

3. Does not work on all Platforms
Internet Explorer is so Microsoft dependent that it is made only for Windows and it hasn’t been coded for Linux. This is a big disadvantage especially if you are somebody who works on different platforms. We all get used to one application and the specific way we like to tweak it, but IE wouldn’t let you do it if you work on different platforms.

4. Not Extendible
What you get with Windows is what you get. No more additions nor subractions. You cannot add any more features like other browsers. If I take any other browser, there are tons of extensions which would make my life so much better than IE which is as rigid as Bill Gates’ smile.

We have a cell phone that works as a camera, video recording, palm pilot and the list goes on. We want to use one application for all(most) the needs. But, with IE, strictly browsing and gateway to viruses.

5. Reject Anarchy
How long can we allow one company to make the rules and rule the world? We need to bring an end to the Microsoft’s rule and it can very well start with rejecting IE.

I was so excited when I heard that Google was buying Opera because Google has the potential to trounce players like Microsoft and they can bring out quality products.

6. Better Options
Mozilla has the best product right now in the market. Its free. Its a household name for geeks, Firefox. Firefox is the best alternative that I have found so far which is very secure, the web designers love this browser as it follows all the standards all the way. It has tons of extensions which would turn your browser into all-in-one application and makes browsing so much better.

If you haven’t switched over yet from Internet Explorer, I would urge you to make the move now. Better late than never. You need to do it before you get taken over by viruses and hackers.

There are other players in the browsers field like Netscape, Opera, Flock and others. What makes Firefox better than the others is that Firefox has a huge community working behind it. Opera and Flock are in the Firefox mould but Netscape is obsolete with no improvements.

7. You are Smart
God made us human beings to be smart and rule over everything. This means, rule over things that are not genuine. We all know that Internet Explorer is not the best out there (infact one of the worst) and we have better options. Why not make a move towards something that is really good? Let me know me if you made the switch or not.
